Social media marketing isn’t really that mysterious; if you take the time to learn the basics, you can achieve quite a bit in a short time. Effective social media marketing comes down to a few important principles, and we’ll be looking at some of these now.

Exploit Twitter: There are many social media sites that are excellent when it comes to marketing but Twitter simply has something that makes it stand out from the pack. It’s been getting accolades from internet marketers who are using it with great success to build a following and brand in their niche. One of your top priorities should be to be as active as possible on Twitter and it’s not even that hard to do because you simply have to tweet your followers with interesting information they find useful and it just takes a few moments a day. Once you’re ready to go and have a Twitter account, you first need to follow as many people in your field as possible. You can use online Twitter directories to find people that are active within your market. When you’re following these people, you can start replying to their tweets, start your own conversations, etc. Your results will improve as you gain more influence on Twitter and your exposure increases. As the number of active followers you have increases, your tweets will gain greater popularity and you will get more clicks.

It’s practically impossible to use all the social media sites available because there are so many of them and you are more likely to fail with this approach. The first step should be to do the smart thing and focus only on a few good social media sites so you aren’t spreading yourself out too thin and get started from there. Plan on being on active user and be consistent in your content posting. As an active user, you will discover that you can get a better response. While you might be tempted to set up accounts on social media sites that don’t have such a high usage rate, you need to limit the temptation and keep it to a minimum.

Promote the Right Content: Remember that not all content is suitable for social media and even if you have excellent quality content it might not deliver the right results. The question is: what type of content does work? Something that’s breaking news, has humor in it, a controversy or simply lists that people like going through.

It’s All About Them: One of the major reason why people fail with social media is because they fail to give. People aren’t going to be impressed with you if all you’re doing is advertising your offers. You have to offer them something before you can expect to get anything from them. Answer questions, provide information and ask people in your network what they most need right now. People will be more willing to consider your offers when you’ve already given them something of value.

If there’s one thing about social media marketing that’s good then it has to be the kind of long term benefit it offers. When you take the time to establish a proper foundation for your social media marketing efforts you’ll have created a major force in your future success.
